Deepest Darkest Bio (full length)

Portland, Oregon is home to Deepest Darkest, a self-described ‘guitar-based rock formation’ who delivers dynamic, energetic performances with humor and a unique twist on Indie music. Lead singer and songwriter, Nate Purscelley (formerly of The Carolines) combines rhythm and chord progressions reminiscent of Heart, The Features and Stone Temple Pilots. But when he pushes away the guitar and pulls the trumpet to his mouth, the new textures might invoke flavors of Cake, Blind Pilot or even Sufjan Stevens.

Purscelley’s involvement with groups such as Derby, Ants Ants Ants, Camp Crush and others put him in collaboration with Derby lead singer of song and guitar natural, Nat Johnson. Johnson’s warm harmonized vocals and distinct guitar tone colors add dimension and depth to Deepest Darkest’s vast and varied song catalog. From crowd favorites such as “Geodesic Dome” to “Feel Like a Monster” (featured on an episode of This American Life), Johnson often lays back in the groove then jumps out to delight the axe fans with overdriven, gritty riffs.

The most recent members to join the group are drum captain, Andy Uppendahl (Careen, Five O’ Clock People) and bass/guitar professor, Chris Nelson (master builder at Dekum Guitar). Uppendahl’s exuberant, and precise drumming style accent the creative, melody-down-below style of Nelson on bass. The two have joined Purscelley and Johnson to become key components to the Deepest Darkest four’s ever-evolving, refreshing take on Indie rock music.

In a 2025 Portland concert at Mississippi Studios supporting Camp Crush, Deepest Darkest surprised and electrified the capacity crowd when Portland trumpeters, Danika Sullivan and Connor Adams (Left on Tenth and Cosacchi), joined Deepest Darkest on stage for the back portion of the set. For many, this was the first time hearing the band’s newest material from their upcoming release with a decidedly cinematic step forward. From the brooding, tense, yet zippy “Bad for Me” to the poppy, pulsing audio embodiment of fun in “Wait for Me”, the band reminded concertgoers why we turn off Netflix and go out to experience live music.
